The Role of Hormone Testing

The Role of Hormone Testing NewsletterWhen our hormones are working properly and in the right combinations, life is good. However, those same hormones that keep us happy and healthy can also cause emotional and physical distress if they are not in balance. Optimal hormone balance is critical to our physical and emotional well-being, as well as long-term protection against age-related concerns such as breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. (For more information about hormone balance, see our newsletter titled All About Balance.) Hormone testing is a valuable tool for achieving optimal hormone balance, as well as for maintaining that balance once it is achieved.

What Are Hormones?

To appreciate the role of hormone testing, it helps to have a basic understanding of what hormones are, what they do, and how they work.

Hormones are substances secreted by glands and transported through the bloodstream to target tissue, where they regulate the functioning of that target tissue. Simply put, hormones convey information among the different cells and tissues that make up our bodies.

September is Healthy Aging Month
Written by Carol Petersen, RPH, CNP - Women's International Pharmacy

Mature Couple SmilingIn The Singularity is Near, Ray Kurzweil and Dr. Terry Grossman write that if we manage to keep ourselves going for the next 20 years, there is reason to believe that we will have learned enough about human physiology that the potential for living indefinitely could become a reality.

While the thought of living indefinitely may not appeal to everyone, successful aging -- that is, living vitally without disease such that we are able to use our bodies and our minds to their full potential throughout our entire lives -- seems to be a common human desire.

This interest in healthy, successful aging has spawned several professional medical groups that are actively addressing the issues, including the American Academy for Anti Aging Medicine (A4M), the Age Management Medical Group (AMMG), the American College for the Advancement of Medeicine (ACAM) and the International College of Integrative Medicine (ICIM).

Progesterone is the Key to Stablizing Insulin Levels
Written by Kathy Lynch, PharmD - Women's International Pharmacy

    Pharmacist Corner

Healthy aging proponents are focusing more and more on one-if not THE-key component of aging: controlling blood sugar and insulin levels. Dr. Platt believes that the primary cause of high insulin is declining progesterone, the hormone predominantly involved in controlling insulin. Progesterone also helps prevent low blood sugar episodes. Dr. Platt treats both men and women with progesterone for these purposes, elaborating on the dose in his book.
